How does it work?

SHR works by gradually heating the skin to a temperature that effectively damages the hair follicles and prevents regrowth. The temperature is low but there is a high repetition of short pulses that give an effective heat build up.

Who can be treated with SHR?

Anyone with unwanted hair can be treated as it is suitable for all skin types – this is because the skin is gradually heated, as opposed to exposing the hair follicle to a single high energy pulse, which can cause trauma to darker skin types. It is even safe on tanned skins (one week post-tanning), making it suitable for treatment any time of year. Most hair colours are treatable but white hairs do not respond well.

How many treatments will I need?

6-8 treatments are usual, depending on the density of your hair, your hair colour and skin colour. Hair growth is in 4 stages and all light/heat treatments only affect the hairs that are in the Anagen stage (actively growing hair). So with each treatment 15-20 % of hair is removed permanently. Once a hair follicle is damaged it cannot grow hair. However, hair follicles that were not in the active growth phase will need to be treated again. It is also not unusual for patients to require further treatment two or so years after the initial treatment, due to hormonal changes. Women suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome or hormonal imbalances may need maintenance treatments sooner.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for the treatment?

Shave the area to be treated the day before or just prior to treatment. There is no ‘downtime’ and no recovery time is needed. You can have a treatment and return to normal activities immediately.

Are there any side effects?

Sometimes a slight redness appears on the skin after treatment accompanied by a brief sense of warmth, this is a normal reaction, which usually vanishes about one hour after treatment.

I first noticed one or two dark hairs on my chin when I was in my mid forties and plucked them out but gradually over the last five years, there are so many that it became a daily ritual of plucking to make sure no one could see them. I read an article about permanent hair reduction and it seemed the answer. Pain free hair removal was also very appealing. I can't believe how my life has changed since having the treatment and my skin looks so much better.
