Until relatively recently, men's interest in looking after themselves and their appearance as they age has usually centred around weight control and fitness, very often by going to the gym regularly. There may have been the occasional spillover into aesthetic treatments such as laser hair removal for a hairy back or prescription medication from the doctor for troublesome acne, but that was about it. Anything more was considered to be sheer vanity and to be avoided so as not to face ridicule.Men Versus Women
Compare this approach to that of many women over the last couple of decades: whilst women might also take care of their weight and shape as they age, there has always been much more focus by both sexes on the effect that ageing is having on their facial appearance. This is because a woman's desirability is tightly associated with her fertility (often subconsciously by her assessor!) and, to put it bluntly, once a woman can see the end of her reproductive years in sight, the fight is on to try not to make it so obvious! Men remain fertile for much longer, and this is thought to be the primary reason why their attractiveness isn't so tightly linked to a youthful appearance. Even going grey is usually not such a big deal for them, or for the women looking at them, for that matter.Aesthetic Treatments for Men - Officially Endorsed!
In recent years though, there has been a slow but discernible rise in interest in aesthetic treatments for men. Undoubtedly this has been fuelled in part by social media, which has accelerated everyone's awareness and knowledge of aesthetic treatments, especially those undertaken by celebrities: reality-TV-celebrities, both male and female, are often extremely candid about the treatments they're having, whilst experts in the field frequently give us their opinion on why some actors look so good for their age by listing out their likely treatments. And it's quite likely that a female partner, friend or family member will suggest at some point that they have a little something done, especially if they themselves have aesthetic treatments. In our experience, it is usually the partner that makes the appointment and provides a pretty decent explanation of what needs to be done!No Feminising of Faces - We Promise!
However, when men attend for aesthetic treatments, their first concern is often that the results will give them a feminine face. This is an unfounded worry as long as treatments are carried out by an experienced clinician, simply because different techniques are used for men's faces. For example, emphasising the brow arch with Botox® isn't so appropriate for men because a flatter eyebrow is more masculine and therefore more aesthetically pleasing. Similarly, filler is often placed in different areas of the face to emphasise youthful masculinity. The Appropriate Treatment for You
So what is out there to help men age "naturally"? Botox® and fillers, both briefly mentioned already and probably the most well-known aesthetic treatments, are very effective in relaxing forehead frowns and restoring lost volume, and can help to maintain a masculine jawline, something that often softens and becomes less defined with age. Incidentally, Botox® is also extremely effective for addressing excessive or bothersome underarm sweating.
More recently, Profhilo® has started to gain popularity with our male patients. It contains hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring acid in the skin which diminishes in quantity with age. Hyaluronic acid attracts water, producing a vastly improved level of hydration. It also helps to build collagen, the skin's underlying scaffolding, and it is particularly effective in lifting the lower face by combating the effect of gravity.
Other treatment options are available that can be used to maintain a youthful masculine appearance, and will depend on the area of concern. For example, we offer Kleresca, skin peels of various strength and photorejuvenation for improving dull, ageing and pigmented skin, as well as for treating acne, prominent facial veins and rosacea. The most appropriate treatment would be advised and explained during the initial consultation. And If You Need Help with the Gym
We are also seeing an increase in men attending for body contouring treatments. Middle-aged spread can hamper even the most ardent gym-goer's efforts, and they may benefit from some cryolipolysis (or fat-freezing, as it is commonly termed) treatments to improve physique.
And for the men who still only want that hairy back sorted out - well, we can do that too, with IPL hair removal.
