Dermal fillers have been used as early as the 1890’s with doctors injecting fat into the face and arms for a more youthful look. Silicone was then used, but because of many problems with it scientists began to explore other alternatives. In 1980, doctors discovered collagen, a form of naturally occurring filler material in the skins of cows and this was used for a while, but had a few difficulties as some people were allergic, so a purer non animal alternative filler was developed using hyaluronic acid. This is a substance that is naturally present in the human body. It is found in the highest concentration in fluids in the eyes and joints. It is made safely in laboratories. Hyaluronic acid is the key molecule involved in skin moisture with a unique capacity to bind and retain water molecules. It is made into a gel in different concentrations to treat different areas of the face, neck or decollatage. This means that your practitioner will select the dermal filler that is the right thickness and consistency i.e. a volumising product where you need lift or volume i.e. the cheeks, shaping or medium depth products for lines and wrinkles and lips, and finer products for very fine lines and contouring lips.
Dermal fillers have had some bad press in the past as fashions with fillers have changed and also our understanding of how to best to rejuvenate a face. Although we still see images that exaggerate our features like lips and cheeks, those treatment results are in the minority and good treatments are the subtle ones that are often undetected by friends and partners! Nowadays, we as practitioners, try to put back the face to how we looked as younger versions of ourselves so if you never had huge cheek pads, don’t get huge cheek pads as you will look a different version of yourself. We lose bone density on our faces from as early as age 25 so fast forward 20/30 years and our support structure under our skin has reduced. Add in some loss of collagen as well and thats when we really see ageing faces, not just lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers can help to support over the bone and under the skin, creating the same result as when you are younger. Filling them to look bigger than what they originally were can make you look different and not always in a good way!
Do your research before you have any treatment. Good products have a higher price tag. You are having these fillers injected into your face so make sure you are having the best type of dermal filler you can. At Springwell Clinic we used Beletero made by Merz and Aliaxin made by Ibsa. As well as looking at the dermal filler used, make sure the practitioner is properly trained. Inexperienced practitioners or having treatments in unhygienic conditions could result in side effects including lumps, infections and blocked blood vessels causing tissue to break down. If you do your research and find the right clinic for you, dermal fillers can rejuvenate your face adding volume if lost, softening lines and wrinkles and making you look more youthful and refreshed.
At Springwell Clinic we also love to rejuvenate lips with dermal fillers but again keeping them realistic to your age, face shape and the shape of your own lips. For older lips, using a very fine filler around the border and in any lipstick/smokers lines, and then adding a very small amount of filler in the body of the lip looks great.
Dermal fillers are used to lift and volumise facial lines and wrinkles, to provide fuller lips, and to smooth the contours of the face to give a more youthful look. They usually contain hyaluronic acid, which hydrates the skin and attracts water, naturally plumping it. A variety of fillers are used from the Belotero and Aliaxin ranges, in order that the appropriate filler for your treatment can be selected.
During your consultation, you will be advised as to which areas of the face would benefit most from treatment. The most common areas are nose-to-mouth lines, mouth-to-chin lines, cheeks, lips, chin and tear troughs under the eyes. Fillers usually last 6 to 18 months, depending on the type and amount of filler used.
HA fillers are long-lasting (6-18 months) but not permanent. The duration depends on the type of product used, how much is used, your age and general health.
Dermal fillers are suitable for men and women over 18 years old. We do not treat you if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have allergies to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine (local anaesthetic). If you are taking blood-thinning agents, you will bruise more easily, so please discuss this with your nurse.
Dermal fillers are injected into the skin using fine needles, which means there is a chance of bruising, localised redness, mild swelling, itching or discomfort. Allergic reactions are rare but can be treated. As with all injections there is a small risk of infection, although precautions are taken to prevent this happening.
This video shows a lip filler treatment. Lips are numbed prior to treatment which takes approximately 30 minutes.
The lip filler procedure reduces lines caused by pursing of the lips, and it also restores lip fullness whilst adding definition.
The Cupid’s Bow is enhanced to correct a flat upper lip and the asymmetry of the lips and perioral area are corrected.
Lip filler treatments last up to 12 months.
Our patient, Tracy, who features in the video said “I view beauty at its best when it’s natural and changes are undetectable instead of fake looking. My highly skilled practitioner, Libbie, delivered flawless results that I’m over the moon with”
I just wanted to say a big thank you for the lovely job you did on my lips. I healed really quickly & I love the results. Ever since you have been treating me with anti - wrinkle injections for the past 3 years - I have decided to have all my cosmetic procedures done by you as I find you very friendly and this puts me at ease. You understand what I need and the results prove that you are not only experienced but an expert at what you do.
